EIGHTEEN HOURS.

That was all he had left to deliver whatever Clint had taken. If he failed, Isla would be the one to pay the price. Her and Mazi. And Adan... He’d be left with nothing all over again.

But he had no intention of handing over anything he recovered.

Adan kicked the solid wood-and-steel plated door with his toe and swung it open. “In you go, kid.”

“Why do we have to stay here?” Mazi dragged her bright purple unicorn suitcase behind her. “Why can’t I sleep in my bed?”

“I told you, Maz. There’s some very bad people looking for us.” Isla maneuvered in behind her daughter, her gaze cutting from the too-small kitchen off to the right to the too-small living room on the left. She raised her attention to him as she walked Mazi over the threshold with one useable arm. “Uncle Adan just wants to keep us safe until it all gets worked out. Think of it as that sleepover you wanted.”

“I love sleepovers! I’m going to check out my room.” Mazi’s suitcase fell as the kid ran down the hallway at full steam.

“Down the hall on the right, kid.” Adan hefted the unicorn suitcase upright. He’d hauled Isla’s overnight bag onto the love seat backed against the living room wall. “I told Officer Majors to help her pack two days of clothes. What the hell did they do? Pack rocks?”

“Probably. Mazi has an entire collection of geodes, and Alma doesn’t have the defenses against an eight-year-old.” Isla moved deeper into the house, seemingly taking everything in from her position on the brown shag carpeting. “She pretty much gets anything she wants from everyone in the department. Fire and rescue, too. I usually have to be the bad guy and cut them off from spoiling her.”

“To be fair, she’s worth spoiling.” He counted off the rhythm of her breathing as her shoulders rose and fell. Never in his life had he imagined seeing her like this. Bruised, broken, unsure of herself and the lies she’d been told. Alone, even with Mazi in tow. Whenever he’d looked toward the future, Clint had been there.

Adan forced himself to release the handle of her overnight bag, and he stretched his shoulder back to ease some of the tightness. They’d been discharged from the hospital a few hours ago, but going back to their lives—to Isla’s house or the station—hadn’t been an option. The shooter and Fischer would most likely have eyes on both places. This was the safest bet, but it meant three people in a house sized for two. “Place isn’t much, but it’ll work. Both bedrooms are at the back, you saw the extent of the kitchen, single bathroom in the hallway. I’ve got sensors on all the doors and windows. As long as you don’t try to open a window or something like that during the night, we should be good.”

“This was the safe house you wanted to being me and Mazi to a few days ago?” she asked.
